- Record Argentine exports: Sunflower oil shipments reached 432,000 tonnes in Q1 2026, nearly double year-ago levels, led by strong Indian demand.
- Downward price pressure: Global sunflower oil prices are falling as supply surges and the premium over other vegetable oils narrows.
- Black Sea competition: Increased Argentine and Bulgarian exports are expected to pressure Ukrainian and Russian exporters and compress regional basis levels.
Global Sunflower Oil Market Update
Global sunflower oil prices are under renewed downward pressure, driven by a surge in Argentine exports and expectations of robust global sunflower seed production this season. According to Oil World data, abundant supply is weighing on the traditional price premium that sunflower oil has held over competing vegetable oils.
Argentine Export Surge
Argentina exported 197,000 tonnes of sunflower oil in March 2026, a 66% increase from 119,000 tonnes in March 2025. India emerged as the dominant buyer, taking 154,000 tonnes versus just 47,000 tonnes in the same month a year earlier. Over January–March 2026, Argentine sunflower oil exports reached a record 432,000 tonnes, almost double the 238,000 tonnes shipped in the corresponding period of 2025.
| Period / Destination | 2025 Exports (tonnes) | 2026 Exports (tonnes) | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| March Total Exports | 119,000 | 197,000 | +66% |
| March Exports to India | 47,000 | 154,000 | +228% |
| Q1 Total Exports (Jan–Mar) | 238,000 | 432,000 | +82% |
Export volumes from Argentina are expected to remain significantly elevated in the coming months, reinforcing the current oversupplied tone in the global sunflower oil market.
Price Dynamics and Inter-Oil Competition
The surge in Argentine availability, combined with an outlook for high global sunflower seed production, is eroding sunflower oil’s historical price premium over other vegetable oils. As the premium narrows, buyers have increased flexibility to switch between sunflower oil and alternatives such as soybean and rapeseed oil, reducing sunflower oil’s pricing power.
Further compression in the premium is anticipated as both Argentina and Bulgaria ramp up shipments, intensifying competition across key import markets.
Impact on Black Sea Sunflower Oil
Bearish for Black Sea origin. The Argentine supply wave is challenging Black Sea exporters, particularly Ukraine and Russia, in core Asian and Middle Eastern destinations. With more competitively priced South American and Bulgarian cargoes available, Black Sea sellers may face increasing pressure to cut offers or improve terms to defend market share.
Traders should closely track Bulgarian export activity and basis developments, as rising competition within the Black Sea region could accelerate regional basis compression and further weigh on outright sunflower oil prices.
