Argentina Soybean Imports Surge to Meet Processing Demand

  • Bullish crush margins: Strong global demand for Argentine soybean meal and oil supports high processing volumes and export flows.
  • Bearish for competitors: Increased Argentine meal exports add competitive pressure on Black Sea sunflower and soybean meal into key import markets.
  • Robust import-crush-export model: January–April soybean imports up 28% year-on-year underpin sustained Argentine presence in global veg protein trade through 2024.

Argentina Ramps Up Soybean Imports

Argentina significantly increased soybean imports in April 2024, bringing in 1 million tonnes and lifting January–April imports to 2.88 million tonnes, up from 2.25 million tonnes in the same period last year. Paraguay remains the dominant supplier, feeding Argentine crush demand.

The higher import volumes reflect strong utilization of Argentina’s processing capacity. Crushers are securing raw beans from neighboring origins to maintain export programs for both soybean meal and soybean oil.

Export Performance: Soybean Oil and Meal

Soybean oil exports regained seasonal strength in April, totaling 586,000 tonnes versus 492,000 tonnes in March. India and Nepal led demand, jointly taking 327,000 tonnes and reinforcing Argentina’s role as a key supplier of vegetable oil into Asian markets.

Soybean meal exports were particularly strong at 2.5 million tonnes in April, exceeding both market expectations and last year’s 2.34 million tonnes. The European Union absorbed 571,000 tonnes, while Vietnam (340,000 tonnes), Saudi Arabia (290,000 tonnes), and Indonesia (226,000 tonnes) remained important destinations.

Flow / Product Period 2024 Volume (tonnes) Comparison / Note

Soybean oil exports to India & Nepal April 327,000 Largest combined buyers
Soybean meal exports April 2,500,000 Above forecasts and last year’s 2,340,000 tonnes
Soybean meal exports to EU April 571,000 Key destination market
Soybean meal exports to Vietnam April 340,000 Strong Asian demand
Soybean meal exports to Saudi Arabia April 290,000 Firm Middle East demand
Soybean meal exports to Indonesia April 226,000 Continued Southeast Asian buying

Implications for Black Sea Markets

The neutral to slightly bearish impact for Black Sea exporters stems from Argentina’s aggressive import-crush-export strategy. Larger volumes of competitively priced Argentine soybean meal are vying for demand in the EU, Middle East, and Asia, directly challenging Black Sea sunflower meal and soybean meal in these regions.

As long as Argentina maintains elevated imports of Paraguayan soybeans and runs crush plants at high rates, global vegetable protein supplies will remain ample, limiting upside for Black Sea meal values and tightening the margin for regional exporters through 2024.
