Ukrainian Rapeseed Meal Exports Pivot to China

  • Bullish: Record Ukrainian rapeseed meal exports of 494,000 tonnes in 2025/26 (July–March), up 2.4 times year-on-year, supported by strong Chinese demand and improved domestic crushing margins.
  • Bearish: Sustainability of current flows is at risk as EU demand has collapsed by 49% and Ukraine faces intensifying competition from Canadian, Indian, and Russian rapeseed meal in the Chinese and Asian markets.

Ukrainian Rapeseed Meal Export Pivot

Ukrainian rapeseed meal exports have surged to a record 494,000 tonnes in the 2025/26 marketing season (July–March), representing a 140% year-on-year increase despite a setback in March shipments. The rapid expansion underscores a structural shift in trade flows as domestic processors respond to policy and margin incentives.

China has emerged as the primary destination for Ukrainian rapeseed meal for the first time, displacing the European Union as the dominant buyer. While Chinese imports have expanded sharply, traditional EU purchases have plunged by 49% versus the prior season, reshaping the demand landscape. Additional demand has come from Turkey and Israel, which have both lifted their intake of Ukrainian rapeseed meal.

Drivers of Domestic Crushing and Export Growth

The expansion in rapeseed meal output and exports is rooted in stronger domestic processing activity. Export duties on raw rapeseed have redirected supplies toward local crushers, effectively encouraging value-added processing rather than the export of unprocessed oilseeds. At the same time, rising crushing margins have reinforced the financial incentives to maximize plant utilization and generate higher volumes of meal for export.

This policy mix has turned Ukraine into a more prominent supplier of processed rapeseed products, with meal flows now oriented increasingly toward Asian markets instead of nearby European buyers.

Competitive Landscape and Logistics Outlook

The outlook for Ukrainian rapeseed meal exports is neutral to bearish from a sustainability perspective. Canada is resuming significant rapeseed meal shipments to China, while India and Russia are boosting their own export presence, heightening competition for market share. These developments could erode Ukraine’s recent gains in the Chinese market over the 2026/27 season.

For Black Sea logistics and chartering, the pivot toward Asian destinations entails longer voyages, altered freight economics, and different handling requirements than the traditional short-haul routes into the EU. With global vegetable meal balances in flux, trade flows are likely to remain volatile, leaving Ukrainian exporters and logistics coordinators exposed to shifting demand patterns and freight spreads.
