Russian Wheat Exports Hit 8-Year High in South Korea

  • Russian exports up: Wheat shipments to South Korea reached ~210,000 tonnes in 2025/26 MY (+14% YoY), the highest since 2017/18 MY and more than double the five-year average.
  • Market share gains: Russia’s share in South Korean wheat imports climbed to 6.2% this season from 1.5% in 2023/24 MY, driven by feed wheat competitiveness.
  • Demand flat: South Korea’s total wheat imports remained steady at 4.5 MMT, with USDA FAS projecting a slight decline to 4.4 MMT in 2026/27 MY.
  • Competitive landscape: The U.S. still holds about 50% of the market, while Australia and Canada focus on milling wheat; Russia’s role is concentrated in feed wheat.
  • Price implications: Neutral to slightly bullish for Black Sea wheat as Russia diversifies export destinations, but further gains hinge on market share, capping upside and keeping FOB competition intense.

Russian Wheat Exports to South Korea Hit Eight-Year High

Russian wheat exports to South Korea reached approximately 210,000 tonnes from July 1, 2025, to April 20, 2026, according to Russia’s federal center “Agroexport” under the Ministry of Agriculture. This is a 14% increase versus the same period in 2024/25 MY and the highest level since 2017/18 MY, when 340,000 tonnes were shipped for the full season. The current season’s volume is more than double the five-year average of 100,000 tonnes.

South Korean Wheat Import Structure

South Korea’s overall wheat import demand remained unchanged at 4.5 million tonnes in 2025/26 MY, based on USDA FAS Seoul’s April report. Despite flat total demand, Russia’s share of South Korean wheat imports has expanded rapidly over recent seasons, indicating successful penetration of this Asian market.

Supplier Positioning and Market Dynamics

Russia mainly supplies feed wheat to South Korea, differentiating its offer from Australia and Canada, which concentrate on milling wheat. The United States remains the dominant supplier with roughly 50% market share, providing both milling and feed wheat. Russia’s growth therefore reflects stronger competitiveness in the feed segment rather than a broader expansion of South Korean demand.

Market Impact and Price Implications

The expansion of Russian wheat exports to South Korea is neutral to slightly bullish for Black Sea wheat. The diversification of export destinations supports baseline demand for Black Sea origins, but the limited size of South Korea’s import program and the projected slight decline to 4.4 million tonnes in 2026/27 MY constrain upside. Further Russian gains are likely to come via market share increases rather than higher aggregate demand, implying continued competitive pressure on Black Sea FOB prices to defend and grow this foothold against established suppliers.
