Ukrainian Agricultural Export Performance – March 2024

Ukraine’s agricultural exports reached 5.5 million tons in March 2024, a 10.8% month-on-month increase and the first notable expansion after four months of stable volumes. The rebound reflects improved logistics capacity and sustained international demand across grains, oilseeds, oils, and processed products.

Grain Export Breakdown

Category March Volume (tons) MoM Change Share of Grain
Total Grains 3,700,000 +7% 100%
Corn 2,775,000 (approx.) 75%
Wheat 888,000 (approx.) 24%
Barley 37,000 (approx.) 1%

Grains remained the backbone of Ukraine’s export mix at 3.7 million tons, up 7% from February. Corn dominated shipments with a 75% share, while wheat accounted for nearly a quarter of grain exports and barley volumes remained marginal.

Oilseeds and Vegetable Oils

Category March Volume (tons) MoM Change Share of Category
Total Oilseeds 338,800 +12% 100%
Soybeans 196,504 (approx.) 58%
Rapeseed 135,520 (approx.) 40%
Sunflower Seeds 3,388 (approx.) 1%
Total Vegetable Oils 506,800 +16% 100%
Sunflower Oil 425,712 84%
Soybean Oil 45,612 (approx.) 9%
Rapeseed Oil 35,476 (approx.) 7%

Oilseeds posted a 12% monthly increase to 338,800 tons, led by soybeans and rapeseed. Vegetable oils delivered the strongest growth at +16%, with sunflower oil making up 84% of this segment, underscoring Ukraine’s role as a key sunflower oil supplier to global markets.

Meal, Processed Products, and Other Exports

Category March Volume (tons) MoM Change Additional Detail
Meal & Cake (Total) 542,600 +15% Sunflower & Soybean Meal
Sunflower Meal Share 396,098 (approx.) 73% of meal exports
Soybean Meal Share 146,502 (approx.) 27% of meal exports
Other Agricultural Products 474,800 +32% Broad mix of commodities

Meal and cake exports rose 15% to 542,600 tons, with sunflower meal accounting for nearly three-quarters of volumes. Other agricultural products expanded by 32% to 474,800 tons, highlighting rising demand beyond core grain and oilseed flows.

Freight Market Implications

The broad-based increase across grains, oilseeds, oils, and meals indicates improved logistics throughput and resilient international demand for Ukrainian commodities. The 7% rise in grain volumes translates into substantial incremental tonnage, supporting utilization of Panamax vessels on Black Sea grain routes. At the same time, strong growth in vegetable oil exports is supportive for smaller tankers. Overall, the March export performance is Neutral to Bullish for Black Sea freight markets, with potential tightening of vessel availability on Ukrainian routes if momentum continues.
